These guidelines draw in part on the Bee Health Service factsheet “Choix de l’emplacement” (in French). Each site still needs to be assessed together.
A clear flight area
Bees need clear space immediately in front of the entrances to leave and return freely. Their flight path should not cross directly over a path, terrace or another frequently used area. We assess the necessary clearance on site, along with any measures to guide their flight.
Facing south to south-east
Ideally, hive entrances face south to south-east to benefit from morning sunshine. The final orientation also takes account of the terrain, winds and neighbours.
Sunshine, with summer shade
A fairly dry, sheltered location with sunshine from the morning is favourable. Shade during the hot midday hours is desirable in summer: full sunshine throughout the day is not the aim.
